Rare, PRAXINOSCOPE THEATRE, invented by Emile Reynaud in 1879. Comes with ten original animation strips. The six scenic cards are original, the candle shade is as usual a fine quality reproduction. The cabinet has a closed crack but is otherwise in excellent condition. The revolving drum is in excellent condition and turns well. Some of the animation strips have various creases and folds which do not affect the overall illusion of movement. Overall a superior example of this classic and desirable pre-cinema item. The “box” when closed measures 10.5” x 10” x 5”. Refer Füsslin page 82 for more information on the Praxinoscope Theatre.
English ZOETROPE, probably by London Stereoscopic Company, circa 1870’s. Comes with 10 colorful animation strips. The drum measures 12” in diameter, and 14” high on the stand. The drum spins very evenly for a good smooth animation effect. The instrument is showing it’s age but it does present an appealing patina, overall very good condition. The strips have a few minor tears and soil. $ 800
Very rare, Brewster Patent telescopic KALEIDOSCOPE by “P. Carpenter – Sole maker”, English circa 1820. Comes with 5 different interchangeable cells. Excellent condition except for a tiny piece of the black covering missing from the tube. The image is bright and clear. All contained in the original cardboard tubes. Refer “Martyr of Science – Sir David Brewster 1781-1868”, page 86. See lot 267 for a copy of this book. $ 4,500
Rare, American diminutive Camera Obscura, circa 1860/70’s. The top is marked “Patent Applied for, J. Lee, NY”. It is of rather primitive design, overall very good to excellent condition. Measures 6” x 4.25” x 2.25”. I have never seen this instrument before, it is possible that it was never put into production. $ 1,100
Rare, early 20th Century, English PANORAMA, showing a variety of scenes including, a circus scene, a firework display of the Crystal Palace, Scott’s ill fated Antarctic Expedition, the Delhi Durbar, volcanic eruption and several other colorful scenes. It moves by a crank handle at the back and also has a candle holder (not recommended!). The lithographic printing is rich, fresh and very colorful. Measures 9.75” wide x 8” high. Exceptionally fine condition for this very fragile item. $ 950
Scarce, FILOSCOPE based on the flicker book principal. The subject of this reel is “The Derby 1896”. A couple of pages missing from the back (as usual), overall very good condition and a good animation effect. Refer to page 28 of the “Ten Year Book” for an illustration of a similar device. $ 600
Hand cranked MUTOSCOPE, with a Charlie Chaplin reel, circa 1930’s. The hand crank operates very smoothly. The coin drop is present but it’s not necessary to put a coin in the slot since it has been adjusted to operate without a coin. As you turn the handle the interior light comes on to illuminate the reel. Measures 51” high by 11” x 14” at the base of the stand. Clearly this has been re-painted at some point and the change drawer has been skillfully replicated. The body of the viewer is made from cast iron and tinplate. The reel is in excellent condition. The cast iron marquee is original but there is no marquee card. This item can be disassembled for shipping. Extra reels and other parts, including marquee cards are available at www.mutoscopeman.com. $ 2,500
Scarce, early model of a “KINORA” animation viewer, ca. 1900. The Kinora is best described as a home version of a Mutoscope in miniature. The crank handle turns the reel and shows a series of photographs creating an animation effect based on the “flicker book” or persistence of vision principal. This particular Kinora is made of golden oak. The base measures 11.75” x 5”. Overall excellent condition, with a very smooth crank movement and excellent optics. Comes with two animation reels # 314 – Ice Skater and # 48 - Yachts Sailing. Refer Balzer page 75 and “The Ten Year Book”, page 28 for more information on the Kinora.
Kinora reel # 348, Train approaching Maidenhead(UK) Junction, with Men Working on the Tracks. Excellent condition, with original box. $ 250
